Supplies for Orchestra Class
|
HOW DO I GET AN INSTRUMENT?
If you don't already have an instrument, I recommend one of these options: 1. You may rent to own through a local music store.
DO NOT BUY AN INSTRUMENT ONLINE! Please see the information at the bottom of this page. There are several reasons why purchasing an instrument now may not be best for the student. |
Students need these supplies every day!
ALL 5th grade and beginning 6th grade orchestra students will use this book all year.
The instrument is printed at the top.
Bass players need a different, stickier rosin.
This is Kolstein brand, which works well.
It costs about $20.
A cleaning cloth is used daily to wipe off fingerprints, rosin, and dirt.
Some have a polish solution in the cloth itself.
Cleaning and polish cloths start at about $3.
You may also use a very soft baby washcloth
or an old soft 100% cotton t-shirt piece.
A music stand is NOT required.
We have stands in our classroom.
These are really useful for practice at home.
When students don't have stands, they tend to
have slouched and incorrect positions.
A music stand at the correct height reinforces
proper instrument position and posture.
This is critical for success.
This type of music stand is around $15.
Where can you purchase these supplies?
Check your local music stores.

Thinking about BUYING your own instrument?
CALL or EMAIL Mrs. Robertson first!

As the students grow, their instrument size will change.
You may want to rent-to-own through a music store.
Music & Arts, for example, offers 100% of rental payments toward the instrument purchase.
Please let Mrs. Robertson look at any bow or instrument BEFORE you commit to buying it.
There have been many students who have been very disappointed with their instruments, bows, and cases.
*Please avoid eBay and Amazon when purchasing an instrument or bow.*
Here is a guide that you may find helpful.
It is written about violins, but it holds true for violas, cellos, and basses too.
